Registration Fees Fund
TSQBA is starting a fund (funded initially at $1000) to help teams cover tournament registration fees where they would not otherwise be able to afford to attend. Grants of up to $100 per school per year can be applied to by emailing Joe and David. These grants can be applied to any standard pyramidal quiz bowl tournament in the area, not just LIQBA or IAC events.
Buzzer Loans
If you are a new school team that is looking for a buzzer system to practice with, TSQBA may be able to loan you a system from 2-4 months. This is typically easier in the fall months, but you are welcome to email David to ask at any point.
If you are holding a tournament and need additional buzzer systems to cover your projected field size, likewise, please email David. While we cannot guarantee the availability of systems, if you email with at least 6 weeks notice, it is very likely that at least some systems can be made available. But you are welcome to check on short notice as well, even if this may not then be possible.
If you are looking to purchase a buzzer system (and if you are setting up a , both IAC and LIQBA recommend the 10-person Tabletop Officiator model made by Anderson Buzzer Systems. This model is found at all IAC and LIQBA events, as it is the most durable, cost-effective, and easiest to set up type of buzzer system that can be found. Many other buzzer systems cost twice as much (or more) and are far more prone to breaking, take longer to set up, and are no more effective for quiz bowl than the simpler Tabletop Officiator model.
Tournament Assistance
The TSQBA is proud to help budding and experienced tournament hosts with hosting their events! Joe and David have hundreds of tournaments’ worth of experience and know the ins-and-outs of running events on par with the very best in the Northeast. If you are considering running a tournament but don’t know where to start, need assistance with scheduling or need to borrow buzzers, need an experienced hand for the day for advice on hiccups (which always happen), need additional staffers, or require anything else related to a tournament whether it’s a little advice or a day-of statkeeper, email Joe and email David and we’ll be happy to work with you. Don’t feel like you’re a bother; we love helping tournaments succeed.
Other Academic Competitions & Partners
The LIQBA and IAC, while the two largest tournament organizers in the northeast, are certainly not the only ones! There are dozens of events that you may attend all throughout the school year, and there are even some that are online.
A great place to find events is the calendar; another great place is on NAQT.com. Traditional hosts in the Tri-State Area include Livingston High School, Ridgewood High School, and High Tech High School in New Jersey; Hunter College High School and Columbia University in New York City; Kellenberg Memorial High School on Long Island; Darien High School in Connecticut; and Horace Greeley High School in the Hudson Valley. That’s obviously not an exhaustive list, so if you’re looking for events to attend, email Joe at joe@liqba.com and he’ll point you in the right direction.
Please note that, while we love all teams and schools who host tournaments and host them in very high esteem, and encourage you to play as much quiz bowl as you can, IAC and LIQBA do not officially endorse any tournaments other than our own.
